Painting’s exultation upon the substrate
expanding the subject of the mandorla
color fields intimate imaginary space
where the mind and the eye play
pleasure from the richly surfaced texture
accretion and accumulation of time
within the picture, a dynamic event
continuing in the rumination of the viewer
Eternal evocations of torments and longings
worshipping the beauty of the supreme range
secret laws blossoming as the artist surrenders
entirely, reverie and revelation pouring
philters upon soul kisses, an intimacy
rivaling that of the amorist, ecstatic interface
communion with inamorata, a tryst of sublimation
Devotee of proportion, line, and chroma
organic curves highlighting impasto unity
pigment glazes adorn the brilliant plane
intensity, contrast, and avant-garde forms
rhythmically assert architectonic genius
sybaritic rapturous artists trace nascent worlds
illuminating the unfixed nature of existence
daydreaming beneath the veil, imbued with subtle metaphor
Sensorial gardens of desire and metamorphosis
truth corroded by passionate individual encounters
creating a diversity of incident, dynamic events
richly sensuous, distinctly colorful and allusive
complexities entwining choruses of mystical luminosity
visceral responses of awe, beloved cries to the inner paramour
vows within the temple of art, consummation of the divine spark

I loved each and every word in this piece Anna. I see artists painting the scenery in my area and I could imagine them thinking, feeling, experiencing what you wrote. Lovely.
How kind of you to say; painting is one of my long term passions.
Powerful write here Anna! Poets dabble in words and artists in colors. You’ve shown here how the 2 can relate and make life all the richer! Great!
Hank
Thank you Hank, I’m glad to hear the forms mixed well.
smiles…i play in art a bit myself and did it well before poetry…nice imagery…i like the last stanza the best…i spent part of friday watching street artists doing various projects along a wall for a festival it was so cool…writing about it for OLN
That’s wonderful you also play in art, I find the various expressions inform and inspire one another. I look forward to reading your OLN offering!
you have such a lovely, lyrical mind… i found myself smiling through this, and as always, amazed at the wonderful words you use
Thanks Kelly, that’s a beautiful compliment :).
lush and passionate like tropical rainforest
Oooo, I love the rainforest, thanks!
Awesome scope, Anna. Artistic endeavors uncovers a whole lot of color, dimensions and connects senses to the mind, giving them intensity, bringing out vibrancy in life, in the things around oneself. Really like it when you write on such things, brings one back to being enthusiastic about such explorations.
Rekindling enthusiasm for the work is an important part of my process and I thought a love poem to painting might be a fun way to do that this week. It is marvelous to hear that it was inspiring. Thank you :)!
see this is the texture of falling in love with art…the deep intimacy of artist and their work, feeling the texture here anna…spellbinding
Thank you Claudia! I wanted to encrust the surface of the poem with florid language to mimic the accretion of paint upon the substrate. I’m thrilled to hear that translated to you as the reader.
It was a wonderfully tactile experience to read this one Anna. Somehow the taste and texture of the words build up a substance… also room to spin in wonder. Reading your work actually feels different… fascinating!
Thanks Becky, nothing like a good spin :)!
What poets and writers do with words, artists do with canvas and other surfaces, your words manged to paint the picture of how an artist ‘eyes’ his subjects and transfers that thought into art.
Another amazing, intricately detailed write Anna.
Thanks Daydreamer, I try to keep things interesting around here :).
A tour de force of intricate, broken down extrapolation – splayed and extended for an extra insight;
Dense, thick and rich… (you can see where i’m going, cant you? 😉 right up my alley (my destination and your subject, as in topic ;), as per usual – lol, cheers anna 😀
Had myself a little giggle fit over this one :). No Arron, I have no idea what you are talking about ;). Too funny!
rich in neologisms and near-neologisms again. old Bill would have been proud of you:-)
I’m so sorry your comment got buried in spam again. Aww, that’s very sweet. I’d like to make up more words but I think the mob might come after me if I did :)!
Every word is a delicacy. Artistic and sexual expression are certainly similar forms of release and creation.
These are my favorite descriptions:
“a dynamic event
continuing in the rumination of the viewer”
“secret laws blossoming as the artist surrenders
entirely”
“organic curves highlighting impasto unity”
Thank you Shawna, I mixed up some art criticism, artists’ letters, and my own take on painting to create this dish. I’m glad you enjoyed its gourmet flavors :).
WHERE….DO…..YOU….FIND….YOUR…..WORDS…… Seriously Anna – this shows your passion and thoughtfulness as an artist- the passion you pour into your paintings comes out here completely – your creative output just astounds me!
Oh, I think that’s one of the best parts about writing, the search for words. Sometimes I find them lonely and neglected in the far reaches of my inner landscape, sometimes they fly by in jet planes demanding attention, and other times I have to mount an expedition to the Himalayas but what a glorious adventure :)! Thank you for the compliment!
Nice imagery, and a great write Anna.
Thank you Ayala. I’ll be by soon as I was at work and haven’t yet made the dVerse rounds.
Quite the commentary. I bet your mind would be an extraordinary visit. I enjoyed the read as always. You squeezed way more out of the painting than I could have. I was expecting a bit on some Scottish Isles, but enjoyed this much more. I know you receive comments on our word choices, but its the passion for the words, and not just the word, but the placement of its meaning from your persepctive I enjoy the most. For what that is worth from me. Luv ur page!
Well Henry, I find it fascinating 🙂 but then again I live here. Your feedback about my passion and placement is a wonderful compliment. It means a lot. There’s something there that is a part of artistry, our own filter for meaning and language that makes our work ours. I have an ongoing obsession with art being about self-possession and I suppose that I view my diction, my perspective, and my love as an integral part of that. I want to make it clearer but I’m a bit delirious from NaPoWriMo :). I’ll try again later.
You are clear. I could have saved a few words and said I truly appreciate your artistry, but I wanted you to know I recognize the effort to give each word its respect in where it is placed in relation to other words and the total POV of the entire piece. You are just a pleasure to read.
Your words arrived in my mind like a parade on Holi (the Hindu festival of color) complete with bejeweled elephants and triumphal music. Thanks for making my day!
You make the paint fly with your tight texture of words, Anna. Sensous. So many dense, visceral brushstrokes.
Thanks Charles, love how you describe the brushstrokes!
That is what I want my wall in my writer’s room to be, a nondesign that holds a million million patterns of its own, where I can discover new with each glance. Beautiful.
I have several books of Gillian Ayres work. I love her, she’s a painter’s painter :).
Strong. Very strong. You had me at exultation and sunk the hook at substrate. Not unique to your writing, but always a treat nonetheless and another terrific example of an outstanding collage of magnificent choice of words. Truly combined as only an artist can, really combining the mediums here. I also really liked the instances of alliteration and consonance. the subtlety used in art is as strong, if not stronger, effect-wise, as it is in poetry and knowing that you know that, I’m sure these phrases were as purposefully utilized as I found them to be. again, fantastic job. thanks
It’s interesting you mention the hook in the first line. I do try to find the point of engagement within the first few lines. It’s wonderful to know that the arts cross-pollinated here as I am, through the video pieces, working toward a more direct integration. I’ve always thought about becoming a film director (only 5% are women!) so maybe it’s a bit of that old dream sneaking in sideways. Your detailed feedback helps me to see from the other side of the picture so to speak. Superlatives are always welcome and appreciated :)!
What shines through here is your love of words – all their meanings, connotations, syllabication, accentuation – and how they can trip up together to make a rollercoaster of sound.
Thank you Samuel, though I worry in adding the texture some of the ideas were obscured. It’s a fine line that I don’t always walk well. The philosophical poems don’t elicit enough of an emotional response or the vortex of language poems overwhelm ideas, I’ll have to give it some thought. Rollercoaster of sound is a nice image :).
I think the only word about art you didn’t use here (well there were many actually) but one that struck me as I read through was “impasto”. The rich textures, building it with light, color, passion, emotions, the weight of admiration for genius, for transformation even transmutation built up that impasto as though you were doing with words what the artist did with the knife. A fascinating way of “building” a poem. I’m always challenged by your work, Anna.
Actually it is there: ‘organic curves highlighting impasto unity’ but it may prove my concern about the language overwhelming as it was lost in the sea so to speak. I think this is an important part of the experimenting though, to find the edges and what works or doesn’t. Gay, I deeply appreciate that you participate in the challenge. My internal drives have to be weighed against the reception so that my poetry doesn’t become like the joke about post-modern art being post-audience art :). Always enjoy your visits.
Your poems are akways so richly layered, like mining thru physical depths whose attachment to the psyche opens windows to regions for further exploration, further depths of meaning. It is like unwinding a cell in those photos that you see where as you go deeper and deeper the complexity begins only then to unfold.
Thank you Charles, it is my intent. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that you’ve seen it and describe it so eloquently here. In my mind it is the responsibility of the artist/poet/composer to build in layer upon layer so that the gift of the work can continue to provide meaning and sustenance to the reader/viewer/listener. I see that gift in your work and am grateful for it.
“secret laws blossoming as the artist surrenders
entirely, reverie and revelation pouring
philters upon soul kisses, an intimacy
rivaling that of the amorist, ecstatic interface
communion with inamorata, a tryst of sublimation”
Love these lines! Almost as passionate as the creation experience itself.
Oh, you picked my favorite part! Thanks, I’m so glad it reflected some of the passion.
