(a children’s poem
inspired by the art
of Judith Clay)
I was once, you see,
a clockwork child
never understanding
all these pieces of me
Alone in a room
I couldn’t manage
to work, no matter
how many fixes I contrived
to my intricate damage
Until one day
I heard a peculiar sound
a roar and a squeak
from a lion I found
He was like me,
part whole and part wheel,
and he endeavored to see
beyond the difficulty, I feel
My trouble, he said
was staying at home in bed
wheels are for turning
and with the wind at our backs
we found our motion,
our own perfect paths

part whole and part wheel…i love this…clockwork child and finding a companion… and def. yes…use those wheels… very cool anna..love it
I do think if a person is feeling down, one of the best things is to open one’s shades (literally or figureatively) and get out of bed, and finding a path where one can turn one’s wheels. I enjoyed this, Anna.
Lovely how the clockwork child and the lion can complement each other and find their motion!
Ah.. love the nursery rhyme in it… and the hope of wind in the backs.. nothing is worse than bicycling against the wind.
complex and lyrical – just wonderful
A clockwork child finding a lion to befriend. A song of comfort for all outsiders. Beautiful!
Lovely share Anna, a different voice from you ~ Liking that clockwork child & lion, then the wheels turning with winds at their backs, another adventure awaiting them ~
smiles…the lion that sees beyond the missing pieces into you…a wonderful love story…and a bit of truth in your life? smiles…hope you and the lion are doing well anna…smiles.
I think you have another field to branch into, Anna. I enjoyed the simplicity of this and the lesson it embeds…that all of us need to hear from time-to-time.
It’s a great discovery that makes life move and in motion. One must always look for such openings. Nicely Anna!

Just beautiful! 🙂
Oh Anna, Anna – I feared you were lost. I haven’t read you in such a long long time and WE CHOSE THE SAME PICTURE (how about that?!). I think this is wonderful, perfectly childlike, and I think our two poems head exactly in the same direction. It’s great to read you again. Hope all is well with you. I am moved and settled and feeling good about the world!
Oh, this is delightful, Anna!
Ha– my brain goes to Pierre Pierre – who said I don’t care and was eaten by a lion – -but then retrieved. Very cool poem, Anna. Well done. k.
I know you intended for a children’s poem… but every adult should read this too! Good job, Anna!
I love it, it is great for all ages! 🙂
Perfect instructive piece artfully exposed in delightful lyrics. Nice work here.
