I have the privilege of hosting Meeting the Bar today where we will explore Bernadette Mayer’s Writing Experiments and hopefully have some fun doing it. I chose to write in 3D. You are welcome to pick any one of the suggestions that appeal to you for today’s prompt. See you at dVerse Poets Pub!
how cool is that…i was wondering how writing in 3D could work…never had thought of doing something like this…ha…love it anna…much fun…thanks for hosting tonight…looking forward to this…
Thanks Claudia, I finally picked one this morning and had to get a move on :D! It was a lot of fun, hopefully others will enjoy the prompt too.
That is very interesting, Anna. I tried to figure out what it would mean to write in 3D. Now I know. (So many good ideas to choose from.)
Mary, I’m thrilled you found many good ideas; I think we’ll get a good response :)!
very very nice. cool stuff.
Thanks Jesse! She’s inspired me before, it was great to revisit and play off her work.
haha fascinating….pop art meets the new age…i like the third verse, subculture hot house…for sure…very cool anna…
Yeah, she’s an amalgamation of influences for sure. If you click the word panda you’ll go to one of her paintings. Her name takes you to her website. Glad you enjoyed it; I’m excited to be back at the pub!
Very intriguing, Anna. Again, you’ve raised the bar.
Thanks Laurie, it was an interesting challenge. I think I’ll do this experiment a few times and get even wilder :).
Oh, Anna–this was great I want to read it with 3-D glasses on 😉
Haha, that would be fun!
this is so cool!!! very inspiring work – love what you did here!
Thanks Miriam I loved yours! Thanks so much for experimenting with us today :)!
Interesting. Read it several times, I like poems that make me do this!! 🙂
Nice to meet you Katie. I’m glad to hear that as my poems often require rereads :).
Brilliant work Anna. You never cease to amaze. Such a great idea.
Thanks, it finally occured to me this morning and I had a blast creating a painting mess to make it.
Love the reference to superflat 🙂
Thanks, great to see you.
superflat: “ukiyo-e executed in a childish manner.”
I agree that it is childish — it is indeed what is considered “sacred” in Japan: weird consumerism and sexual fetishism and anime seems to explore (and some of her stuff). That is the new sacred, superficiality of Japan. While anime which I love, counter to that, is that of Hayao Miyazaki who I imagine you also love.
Thanks for the links to Kayukawa work
BTW, that character written in snow on is “ookami” Wolf. Which has a feel of panic, confusion because of the word roobai == made from the wolf kanji. Well, at least to me.
Thanx for making me think.
Yes, I love Miyazaki :D. Anytime on the making you think and hey, there are links!
Oh yes, and I indeed read all the links before I made my comment — loved them, thanks. Can your software show you how many folks click on links. Mine does — almost nobody. But on my philosophy blog, where ideas are why folks visit, they are clicked all the time. Says something about most visitors at poetry blogs, eh?
About 10 people clicked the links. Some poets (like Arron) are already familiar with this art movement. Thanks for the feedback on the links.
On my poem I put up yesterday, I had 2 clicks out of 54 visits. That was a lot for me — and I am happy to supply links for two folks — zero would not have been surprising.
Your 10 is good, but I wager you had far more that 54 visits for this post (since you were the host). And was that 10 clicks for ALL the links or 10 clicks all together: 3 for one link, 3 for another….
Anyway, I am sure you see my point.
I like how you linked them right in the poem — I wonder if that profanes the poem for some folks. I think linking in the poem probably helps — whereas if you put it in a footnote, lots of folks would not get that far.
Hey, if you get a chance to make a “critical” comment on the poem I put up yesterday about “Men’s Urinals”, I’d appreciate it. I came here again after seeing your comment on another poetry site.
Wow! To write in 3d intrigued me but couldn’t figure it out…very cool piece!
Thanks, I thought it might be a bit of a challenge while addressing superflat inspired art :).
This is such an interesting writing process ~ Thanks for showing us how its done ~
I’m so glad you found inspiration in Mayer’s list; always a pleasure to see you.
most excellent prompt anna
and your 3D PO is V.cool and bang on point
for the avant garde neo-Wave off Kanagawa 🙂
my mind is now racing with 3iDeas
hope you are well
Love you caught the Great Wave off Kanagawa, you are so wickedly smart! Nice play on 3iDeas and awesome you caught the Mayer recording. I am very well this morning, thank you. Happy New Year!
..i agree… the prompt you provide us today’s really interesting and helpful… thank you for bringing us B. Mayer’s writing experiments… so much to explore and meditate…. you’ve chosen to write in 3D and the topic itself intrigues me… i find your stanzas like a three sets of contemporary haikus combined together with ease…. smiles…
Thanks fantastic to hear, I have found them to be very useful. I needed small stanzas to fit on that mini art toy :D.
Very cool prompt, Anna. I love where you went with it, so amazing. As for the poetry itself, the wonderful alliteration is a nice touch, and each stanza is strong in its own right. I love it all, but my favorite line would have to be “pop art girls snog anime animals”. Thanks for the opportunity!
I loved your response, thanks so much for taking the time to join in the fun. That’s my favorite line too :).
Mine too. 😉
😀

Thank you, I’ve been under the weather but will visit soon. Wonderful to see you again :D!
Much thanks for both the prompt and the hints.
Absolutely, glad they helped.
This is so cool!
This is crazy-awesome, Anna. I love it!!! This piece reminds me a bit of Luke Prater’s writing style.
The mid-section is my fave:
“pop art girls snog anime animals
postmodern bestiary of familiars
floral fantasia collides with
kawaii panda bears”
You are supa cool, girl.
I left a few comments about the experiment suggestions over at dverse. Thank you, Anna. This was a great prompt.
Thanks, you really made my week with this comment :D!
underneath looks to me like water or waves, like japanese woodcuts, a different sensibility from kawaii? your 3d poem feels like a mute ecology wrapped in human aesthetics. but perhaps that is
what my mind is full of, i am wrapping it by reading and commenting =).
this is another favourite piece of 3d ‘poetry’

perhaps it is a new life or aesthetic being born
from within older woodcut and paper aesthetics =)
best wishes j
I can’t wait to check out the links. I’ve been offline due to injury and some wonderful reasons :D! I always love having you visit. Happy New Year!
LOVE this, Anna! and i really enjoyed your prompt!
Happy New Year!
♥
Thanks, you did a great job in responding. Happy New Year :)!
Didn’t think I could find something that even put me back a few notches. Wow. this is very cool. Really like how this worked out. Glad to see you back. Missed your writing past few weeks. And about time your little guys made it out to the main stage, as they’re really cool:) Great prompt, sorry I missed out on joining in, but definitely enjoyed much of what others shared.
Sorry I’ve been away so long and haven’t been keeping up on commenting. I look forward to catching up on reading when things slow down a bit here. Glad you enjoyed the prompt :D.
Anna, this is cool!
Happy and healthy New Year!
And to you too :D!!!
This is really unique! I like it.
Thanks, it was a lot of fun to work on.
What a cool idea! I love this tribute, and it looks like fun.
Happy New Year, Anna. 🙂
Happy New Year :D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait to see what you’ve been writing.
oh that is brilliant! I love the “Supa Luva”, embedded with your skilful linguistic. Your word choices complement each other so well here, the whole piece has a musicality to it! Must try this 3D writing
I think you’d enjoy it. It’s wonderful to see you again :).
I wanted you to know I nominated you for the Liebster Blogger Award.
Thank you!
