Despite all barriers, rules, and protestations, love arrives, an intriguing anomaly
Inner particle accelerator measures the velocity and impact, fusion’s intriguing anomaly
Faster than light neutrinos could recant a century of physics, intriguing anomaly
Scientists descry, calibrate, and recalculate this intriguing anomaly
Love, an edifying element, a shortcut along the 5th dimension, intriguing anomaly
A frontier, a revolution, ‘like a bullet passing through a bank of fog’, intriguing anomaly
Immutable laws show mercurial nature, a burgeoning possibility, an intriguing anomaly
Precursor inculcates, humanity’s flourishing: phenomenon or intriguing anomaly
Sagan Rule, 60 nanoseconds, we want proof to determine if this is an intriguing anomaly
Evidence of a chimera, is this an apogee or merely an intriguing anomaly
Oh halcyon days of laud and veneration now an intriguing anomaly
A nascent era birthing, surpassing this intriguing anomaly
Catalyst, you traverse me, a speed racer, love’s intriguing anomaly
Supernova manna, illuminates the overwhelming implications of this intriguing anomaly
Here’s the link to an LA Times article about the anomaly http://www.latimes.com/news/science/la-sci-0923-speed-of-light-20110923,0,497738.story
love is indeed an anomaly, and your poem is beautiful!
Thank you Mary!
Enjoyed this! Love’s intriguing analomy as a speed racer… great analogy. The use of repitition at the end of each line is unequivocally penetrating.
Thanks Laurie, I am looking forward to reading your poem.
Love and physics mate, an intriguing anomaly(okay, I just had to say it because it sounded like fun.) I really feel like this would be most appropriate to recite in costume, walking with linked arms through a renaissance fair (or maybe a science fair.) You have owned repetition here. The independent couplets remind me of the ghazal form. Very light hearted and a joy to read and ponder, Anna. Now I want to cry out “Oh halcyon days of laud and veneration!”
Yeesh. Sorry I missed the ‘ghazal’ part. Long night.
No worries, I figured you’ve been quite busy. Now, what type of costumes, hmmmm.
Anna, I read this first as being slyly comic, and I still think it is, to a point. But the ending makes it more than that. Get out of the wayyyyyyyy, speed racer coming through, and no data will be repeatable after that! 😉
Thanks Fireblossom, love wayyyyyy (made me want to move, too late!).
Yay. Another science poet. Good job.
Thanks, I always enjoy a good science poem, enjoyed your flash drive piece.
of course you choose this topic – nice job – ive been studying this anomoly all day – it could be a data fart or human error or it could change everything – good poem anna and nice work with the form and the hot topic – excellent
Yes, what weighs less than nothing? I can’t seem to get it out of my mind :). Why of course (out of curiosity)? Also, love ‘human error or could change everything’ so true of most of life.
You would probably enjoy a book by Douglas Preston called Blasphemy. If you haven’t read it, it is all about a supercollider they build and at the point of collision/explosion, they encounter an alien or, is it God? What a fantastic read it was.
This reminded me of that. Love is an anomaly. I also read another book that supposed that the soul can actually be weighed. They put a dying man in his last few minutes of life (a scientist who volunteered for the experiment) into a sealed glass case, a vacuum. Nothing could get in or out. His weight was being monitored on a digital scale along with vital signs, micro seconds after the point of death, he weighed a tiny bit less. They reasoned that the soul does indeed leave the body. I find it all so fascinating.
This really was a lovely piece Lovely piece of work, intricate and beautiful,
Thanks very much for the book recommendation, fascinating comment, and lovely compliment!
perhaps love
is the beginning,
wonderful possibility
the rest is anomaly =)
‘A million times I ask you,
And then I ask you over again.
You only answer
Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps.’ 🙂
Supernova manna! What a great image. Great poem.
Thanks, supernovas also create neutrinos so that’s where the inspiration came from.
Love calling love an intriguing anomaly. I used to think of love (amongst us humans) as a necessary perversion. Doesn’t quite have the charm of your description, though!
A necessary perversion, ouch. Yes, I do like a bit of charm, especially when it comes to love and physics :).
I love your closing line speed racer “Catalyst, you traverse me, a speed racer, love’s intriguing anomaly Supernova manna, illuminates the overwhelming implications of this intriguing anomaly” this is a great closing and like you are racing for love at the speed of light
http://gatelesspassage.com/2011/09/24/loneliness-the-anger-of-lost-hope/
Thanks, or perhaps even faster than the speed of light (we’ll find out, though Fermilab can’t confirm the CERN results until 2013)!
This is a big day for me, as I’ve read the word “halcyon” twice now! heheh. (This might give you a clue as to how I fared with the other big words!) This is a beautiful piece and I love how you drew science and love together.
Hehe, well the theme is repetition and I find that’s a great way to learn big words :). Thank you for your kind comment.
love’s intriguing anomaly – beautiful repetitive phrase at every verse.
enjoyed this lovely poem ~
Thank you, Heaven, lovely to have you visit again.
Oh Anna..beautiful and clever… The word choice here is a wonder..and how you managed to keep your refrain line fresh a marvel.. Much enjoyed..
Thanks Becky, I’m so happy you appreciate the word choice, it was an area I wanted to get right for this one. Yes, that refrain I find is the bane of the ghazal but I wanted to try another and thanks to Joy’s great prompt I did.
the physics of love…enjoyed your ghazal anna…isn’t love the greatest anomaly in the world…and who could measure and calibrate and calculate..and who would want to….smiles…loved it
Hello Claudia, always lovely to have you visit. I thought you might enjoy this one :).
I always adore ur writing …
n dis ghazal is superbly written.
Due to hectic schedule m unable to read u regularly..
but few visits r better than none 🙂
Thanks Jyoti, any visits from you are deeply appreciated :). I look forward to reading what you’ve been writing. Thank you for the lovely compliments!
Searches in physics to the meaning of universe parallel our search for the meaning to life. Is love a thing that should not logically exist, but does? Always there having an effect, always elusive when you look for it, and appears when you least expect. Sometimes only for a while, sometimes a lifetime. It really is an intriguing anomaly.
Enjoyed it. 🙂
Precisely Ravenblack, that invisible, weightless power, oh love. Thanks so much for coming by to read.
Well done!
Thanks MZ!
We forget that love has a very scientific component to it. Such a fantastic job of describing the “anomaly” of love, Anna–it sure can be.
Thanks Bodhirose, it was a fun prompt.
lovely words…nicely crafted lines!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it.
ahhhh… this is beautiful…
“illuminates the overwhelming implications of this intriguing anomaly”
can i repeat myself? beautiful beautiful beautiful
and so smart!
i love your language, your choices. always intriguing.
🙂 deb
Thanks Deb, you’ve put a song in my heart today :)!
Love, an edifying element, a shortcut along the 5th dimension – this is the line that sung out to me and made me what to respond with a resounding, yes! Lol
Thanks Sheila, lovely to see you here! Oooo, a resounding yes, I like the sound of that.
Well it’s an interesting ghazal; I think a little tongue in cheek. it’s hard to know what anything is – when you’re in love, you don’t know what anything is – but then you don’t really care. Is it an anomaly – no I think it’s hard wired into the dna of living things — it shouts procreate, procreate!
True, love is everywhere, this was written from the standpoint of a person for whom love isn’t familiar, or a certain type of love anyway but it really was more about the physics, guess I’ll have to work on it. The anomaly at CERN really got me going.
You read this poem, and you see how many definitions there are of “Intriguing anomaly.” Effective use of the repetition prompt – excellent.
Yes, it made it easier to use as the refrain, thanks for visiting.
can physics or science truly explain the mystery and the dance that is love and what it truly does to us once we find it….really nicely played as far as the repitition as well….
Thanks Brian, hope you had a lovely weekend vacation.
Love and physics-2 great mysteries. Your poem sends my sleepy morning mind off in many directions! Have you read “As She Climbed Across the Table” by Jonathan Lethem? It’s a satirical fictional story about artificial intelligence, particle physics, black holes, and love.
I haven’t but I’ll have to look for it, thanks for the book recommendation!
completely wonderful and timely too. Excellent.
Thanks Jesse! I’m looking forward to reading your work, I’ll be by this evening.
Like this twist on the ghazal form. Now you got me curious how one can measure something going faster than the speed of light. 🙂
Check out the article and all will be revealed (not really, no one knows why it happened :))
Thanks! (I posted before I went to your link –as you point out all is explained in article. One doesn’t directly measure speed of neutrinos — only time how long they get from point A to point B. Given the nature of quantum physics, its very possible that something else is going on besides neutrinos every surpassing the velocity of light. Very interesting! Thanks!)
Sorry taken far too long to reach back (!) and re-read this, I loved it when it arrived in my email box, wonderful timing with the news, whether it be found an error or not later, interesting form and especially appreciate the great interweaving>>>properties of Light and Love…what more can anyone ask for…well except food etc! ha! but you understand what I mean…
I do understand, thank you ever so much for stopping by to tell me about your response (I thought you might enjoy this one).
