Crossing the threshold
Between dream and reality
A hypnopompic state
Orienting to a more stable country
Yet still present to resonant images
Of the internal space
The artist is a liminal being
Caught between the muse and a self
Venturing out even in daylight
An avatar in a virtual world
Disoriented by its double life
Artists require apotropaic magic
To make it back intact
Whole and capable of translation
Dangers faced by mystics,
Long lost in ecstasies –
A logorrheic tongue
The dreamer never wakes
Intricate, gentle, and full of vivid imagery, lovely.
I like the drawing out of liminality here but am a bit stuck on some of the terms – hypnopompic, apotropaic, logorrheic?… yes we all see through interpretations / dreams, poets may often be the more wakeful, liminality the truer certainty…
A hypnopompic state is the threshhold between sleeping and waking (a liminal space) that you experience in the morning, apotropaic magic is anything that protects against evil (Egyptians had apotropaic wands, some cultures have the evil eye), logorrhea is excessive babbling or talking that makes no sense to the listener. Does that make things clearer? Thank you for commenting.
That was a very helpful reply to my unasked questions – though I enjoyed the rhythm of the words with out thoroughly understanding their meaning! Must be the mystic in me…
ah glad i read the comments…they are some cool works but was afraid i was missing a level of understanding…thanks anna…nice write…
A gorgeous write Anna.. // Peter.
Philosophic and thought-provoking. Strong word use – though like Brian I’m glad I looked to the comments to check up on a couple of them – rendering a vivid and striking look at the art and artists we do so love…unique, and intriguing.
I think too many people are wakeful and never dream.
Wow the language in this stunning =)
Thanks for referring me here, Anna, I love your picture of the artist as avatar, of the importance of the liminal places(states) in the finding and pulling out of art, and your wonderful use of specific descriptors that carry an entire sentence/concept in one word (hypnopompic, for example) I love to be challenged by words–to learn new ones–like learning new spells. ;_) It was also nice to get a comment from someone who is familiar with the archetypes I often draw on in my own work. You might enjoy my sestinas based on the festivals of the pagan year cycle,( listed on my sidebar as hedgerider’s lament, I-III ) sometime when you are roaming through cyberspace.
I look forward to reading your sestinas and will do so today. It is especially heartening to hear your comment about the specific descriptors. Condensing phrases into melodious, neglected words allows them to spring forth in the mind, to make new connections, and surprise. I think that an intrinsic love of language is what draws many of us to poetry. Thank you for your insightful and coruscate engagement.
the dreamer never awakes. truly.
Impressive piece. I must tell you, those liminal spaces are, for me, almost always breathtaking. Sometimes because of their beauty, their profundity and sometimes because the scare the heck out of me.
Kim, thank you for your valuable feedback. I love your description of liminal spaces! I feel the same way.
