Cryptoglyphs of abandoned meaning
floating like lotus blooms
on a eutrophic pond
an elegy of decay
pirouetting rot dancing
atop an unsung grave
drowned miracles of renewal
leaves no breath of hope
only the necrotic beauty of hypoxic terror
dirge of slow water
spiral sink of suffocation
solipsistic swan song
on repeat
still life fruits of Maximalist riches
hoarded, set afloat
on a reflective surface
distorted abundance
specious luxury atop
a glamorous avarice
landscapes of the apocalypse
portraits of pollution
framed by golden augers
grim in their pernicious attention
to detail

This is so layered and complex, a dark and apocalyptic assessment of our “haves and have nots” reality, our valuation of things that don’t matter, our worship of ‘heroes’ who aren’t. I’m staggered by the lyrical depiction of the terrible – your word choices are amazing.
Anna, I love how you skillfully use cryptoglyphs to convey the decay and necrotic beauty of abandoned meaning.

I like the way your poem turned like a necrotic kaleidoscope, Anna, with each stanza dropping into place. These lines stand out for me:
‘an elegy of decay
pirouetting rot dancing
atop an unsung grave’
and
‘drowned miracles of renewal
leaves no breath of hope’.
So many great uses with words to portray the decay humanity cause to ourselves… we are all truly the apocalypse (cause, reason and end)
A chilling write, makes me think of the world as a still life painting.
Your poem is a world stripped bare of beauty with prophetic warnings for all of us. Very well written.
Dark and foreboding. I learned a couple of new words.
Fascinating description throughout, although perhaps one of the simplest stanzas is my favorite:
“an elegy of decay
pirouetting rot dancing
atop an unsung grave”
That opening stanza itself is a powerful opening, Anna. And the prognosis is chilling. Love how the imagery conflates and elongates in an approximation of trying to breathe in the “spiral sink of suffocation.”
