- Angels and Their Horses, 1985 (c) 2017 Estate of Purvis Young, Artists Right Society
for Purvis Young
communing without an intercessor
in an abandoned Overtown alley
calling wild horses of liberation
emancipating angels in a sea
that dances waves on the color line
blurring its harsh boundaries
to reveal the humanizing petition
of an autodidactic sinner
singing his redemption song
So very literate, turning image into word, very well done..
A coiled, blurred, dancing and galloping coitus at street level … there is a region of art where learning is moot and the conversation is wholly with one’s own angels — for some, a deep and embracing one. Fine homage.
A lovely response and tribute. I particularly liked:
emancipating angels in a sea
that dances waves on the color line
This is absolutely splendid writing! I especially like; “emancipating angels in a sea that dances waves on the color line.”
I love it… the line of blurring the harsh boundaries seems to be something that is still more hope than real.
