walking along a ravine
of sun-caked mud
crisp-cutting sounds
grasshopper wing song
of independence
shade like shadow
has its own atmospheric
melancholy and joy
symphony in the air
whispering spirituals
under a willow cloak
shape-shifting shaman
fluidity of your presence
water in an arid land
free flowing wild
climbing the
hollowed trail
canyon walls kissed
with wind symbols
images of liberation
shade like shadow
incants secrets
paints landscape
swaths of transformation
intermittent streams

This poem is written to congratulate him on his book deal!
I admire the transformation in the end ~ Specially love this part:
canyon walls kissed
with wind symbols
images of liberation
How lovely to see you Anna ~ Hope things are not as hectic as before ~
Oh.. the earth
the desert
the mountains
all comprise
a world without
humans and
problems
too.. oh..
humans who
touch this have
no problems now
just breathing
air of mountain rise..:)
Always a lovely surprise when you surface at the Pub. This piece is tribute to Nature, with the metaphysical shadings you adore. Thanks for the stop by my site. I like your lines /grasshopper
wind song/of independence/. I know you tire of hearing how much we miss your hosting & pub tending, but there it is; smile.
How great to see you at the bar.. this take me back to the desert I experienced many years ago, I smell the creosote bush, and I seek the shadow of the cottonwood…. just there to hear those drums.. wonderful, how you used the shade like shadow..
hollowed trail
canyon walls kissed
with wind symbols
images of liberation……….. my fav also
I love how you represented “my” Southwest and tied in the spiritual energy of that part of the world. Truly “delicious.”
You style can be so magically musical. Take the phrase “grasshopper wing song” which is perfect. Like how you shift accents creating very musical syncopation as in the first stanza where “walking along a ravine” sets the beat and “crisp-cutting sounds” plays against it. This is a truly special poem, clear, concise, very accessible, very musical and beautiful.
I’ve missed your work, Anna, and was so happy to read this one again. This morning during my “quiet” time, I was thinking of the desert here (where I am right now in SoCal) and how it is so metaphorical of our life journey and our need for water…real and symbolic. This seemed to fit that theme:
under a willow cloak
shape-shifting shaman
fluidity of your presence
water in an arid land
free flowing wild
